GHG Accounting

Measuring, understanding and reducing emissions

You can only manage what you measure. Effective CO₂ management begins with the assessment of a company’s carbon footprint, known as the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF), and/or the product carbon footprint, known as the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF). This involves structured data collection, the calculation of emissions, and further steps such as climate transition plans, measures and reduction targets.

Note: We use the term ‘carbon footprint’ synonymously with ‘greenhouse gas footprint’. In addition to CO₂, other greenhouse gases are also taken into account in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and reported as CO₂ equivalents (CO₂e).

Why a systematic carbon footprint assessment is worthwhile for your company

  • Identify hotspots: Pinpoints your biggest emission sources—saving time and resources.
  • Set and steer targets: Provides the baseline for measurable goals and effective actions toward net zero.
  • Reliable metrics: Delivers fast, credible CO₂e data for clients, customers, and investors—building trust.
  • Regulatory fit: A GHG Protocol-aligned footprint supports compliance with key requirements across laws/standards and reduces legal risk.

How SuCo supports you

From the initial consultation to a complete corporate carbon footprint, we guide you through a clear, efficient process. We set objectives and system boundaries (Scope 1, Scope 2, optional Scope 3) in line with the GHG Protocol, structure data collection, validate consumption and activity data, and calculate your carbon footprint. You receive an easy-to-read report with methodology, emission source analysis, and actionable recommendations—ideal for carbon management and carbon reporting.

On request, we can use this data to set reduction targets that are compatible with the requirements of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and develop a realistic action plan. We also support you in drawing up your climate transformation plan and train your team so that you can efficiently implement future updates to your carbon footprint internally.

Our approach – in three steps

1. Set system boundaries
First, we work with you to establish the organisational framework. In doing so, we clarify which sites, subsidiaries and business units are to be included in the balance sheet. We then define the operational scope and decide which categories of items to include. This results in a clearly defined balance sheet framework that is precisely tailored to your corporate structure and serves as a solid foundation for all subsequent steps.

2. Collecting data
We provide you with a customised template for recording the relevant data. If data cannot be obtained for individual sites or categories, we will help you estimate it, for example based on the floor area of your buildings. Depending on data availability, revenue-based data (spend-based), volume-based data (based on the weight of purchased goods) or even supplier- or product-specific data can be collected and used.

3. Calculate your carbon footprint
Using the data collected, we calculate your company’s carbon footprint. You will receive this footprint as a detailed breakdown, categorised into relevant categories and sub-categories. You will also receive documentation of the methodology and the calculation principles used. This allows you to see your main emission drivers at a glance and provides the basis for setting targets and planning measures.
